Stuck in the same loop

It seems I've been stuck riding in the same loop this week, and it's my fault.  I was going to ride a longer, easier (no steep hills) loop which consists mostly of roads but I chickened out due to it being the afternoon when I decided to head out.  Even though Roxy is fine with traffic, I knew the UPS truck hadn't gone by and haying was going on across the street along with the neighbors mowing with their dogs out - it was too much for ME to deal with - lol!

The last couple of rides have been very, very buggy even in the early morning.  So with that, today's lesson will be on the ground trying to have her accept fly spray....this should be interesting.  More on that one, as I may need advise.

Roxy was quick on the ride yesterday averaging 4.3mph at a fast walk.  She's getting better about climbing hills and she sure is confident going down them.  We did encounter a "monster" on yesterdays ride!  Turns out a turkey was hiding in the brush, she knew something was there but not what it was.  I had just read a blog post by Endurance Granny concerning her encounter with turkeys, Endurance Granny's Turkey Story , and never expected Roxy to react the way she did.  Once I got her to stop her feet, all she did was snort at them....very loudly, it was kinda funny after the fact.  Guess I need to entice the turkey's into the horse's field more often.

Hopefully Saturday and Sunday we will head out in another direction.

The Medium Loop

Endomondo Riding Workout: "was out riding 4.83 miles in 1h:22m:17s using Endomondo."

Well Roxy and I rode what I call the "medium" loop this morning. Turns out its the same distance as what we did on Friday, but on that one we back tracked because of something "scary" in the blueberry field. In hindsight I should have worked her past that spot, but since it was my first real ride since falling off, I tried to turn her to get her mind on me but she wanted out of there. Oh well, it made for a longer ride.

Back to this mornings ride. I was a little hesitant on taking her right out of the stall but she did great! So far her spookiness comes from ME. I used the heart rate monitor but need to tweak it as I wasn't aware that the probe for the girth area was sliding around. No wonder the readings were all over the place.

The ride itself was nice but those darn deerflies - anyone have any remedies for them? The trail footing was nice and I had forgotten how steep a couple of those hills can be...can't wait until she's more muscled up to be able to trot up them but for now it's walk, walk, walk and walk.

My first conditioning ride. Also my first real ride since falling off on November 6, 2010! I'm very proud of my new girl :)

Pic of her from the other night....more info to come.
